The brown crake (''Amaurornis akool''), or brown bush-hen, is a waterbird in the rail and crake family (''Rallidae'') found in South Asia. Its genus name, ''Amaurornis'', comes from the Greek ''amauros'', meaning "dusky" or "brown" and ''ornis'', meaning "bird".〔Jobling (2010), p. 43〕 The species name, ''akool'', is of uncertain origin.
